Sept. 1, 2005 COMMERCE - The Lions take their act on the road in tuning up for their home opener Sept. 6. But before they can rest their feet in Commerce again, the Lions travel to the Grand Canyon Cactus Classic for the 2-day Arizona tournament. Complete Release in PDF Format
The Lions have dropped their last two games, but not before taking a decisive fifth game over Angelo State to open the season and again in a comeback to beat Colorado-Colorado Springs. Jane Latu is averaging better than three kills per game and Jackie Orr is putting up similar numbers with digs as the libero. Latu placed 18 kills in the Colorado-Colorado Springs win, while Orr had a career-best 24 digs in the Colorado State-Pueblo match. Both were noted for their top performances by the Lone Star Conference. LADY MUSTANGS In Western New Mexico's lone win, Stephanie Higgins, at outside hitter the team's leading attacker, scored 17 kills in the 3-game sweep of Cal Poly-Pomona. The Lady Mustangs (1-3) have lost their last two matches. LADY COUGARS Colorado Christian (0-2) suffered a sweep at the Mile High Classic, including a 3-1 loss to the Lone Star Conference's own Texas Woman's. ANTELOPES GCU takes its own rough start in to their own tournament, falling four straight to open the season and loosing all but one game in the stretch. SKYHAWKS
LeeAnne Greenwade takes a 3.85 kills average per game into the tournament. She could proved to be a touch opponent when Ft. Lewis (0-4) faces the Lions in the afternoon match Saturday. Nicole Schwab is at 3.00 kills per game and has a .280 attack percentage. Opponents are successful on .244 of attacks for an average of 17.31 per game.
