Women's volleyball shows advances in Denton

April 8, 2006

DENTON, Texas - A&M-Commerce volleyball continued its exhibition schedule on Saturday at the Texas Woman's University Spring Tournament.

The Lions lost their first and third games to San Jacinto College, 30-20 and 30-19, respectively. Brittany Williams helped the Lions to score a 30-17 win in the second game and take a 20-11 lead in Game 4 of the time-limited match.

"Brittany passed phenomenally," Lion head coach Gwen Weatherford said. That play continued against UT at Dallas as Colleen Favaro and Jennifer Hill led offensively. The Lions were firmly in control with 30-22 and 30-21 wins in the first two games. The Comets won the final game 30-24 but not before the Lions responded with a 9-2 run.

"They are always willing to compete. It's a never-say-die attitude," Weatherford said.

Jackie Orr and Alicia Capparelli shared the setting duties for the afternoon at the 16-team exhibition tournament.

In the final match, Texas Woman's shutout the Lions on scores of 30-23 and 30-26 with an overpowering defensive showing.

"We'll continue working to sharpen our passing," Weatherford continued. "I want us to be the best passing team in the Lone Star Conference."

The Lions travel to Durant, Okla., to face Southeastern Oklahoma State on April 13 at 5 p.m.
