LIONS COME UP SHORT AT HOME

COMMERCE,Texas. - After almost a month of road play, the Lions returned home to face the Lady Savages of Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Lady Savages were meeting the Lions in conference play for the second time this season, and came up on top of with a 3-1 victory. The Lions (9-14, 1-5) came close to rally in both the third and fourth games where they took the third game with a 30-32 win. In the decisive fourth game the Lions went on a 3-0 rally against the Lady Savages to come up short in a close 30-27 loss to end the match. "This was a tough match for the girls," said Coach Gwen Weatherford. "We tried to make some adjustments at the beginning of the game, then a little more comfortable in the third and fourth games, but we could never really get a good rhythm," Weatherford said. Stand outs for the Lions' offense were junior transfer middle blocker Jane Latu, who had 23 kills for the game, along with 12 digs. Other Lions in action were libero Jackie Orr and setter Alicia Capparelli, who combined for 33 digs. Capparelli also had 45 assist for the Lions. Defensively for the Lions was Defensive player of the week Collen Favaro. She led the team in blocks against the Lady Savages with three followed by Tosha Spain, who had two for the night.
The Lady Savages leader of the evening was Lone Star Conference leader in kills Olivia Francenskini, who lead her team with 36 kills for the night. The Lions will be heading to Wichita Falls Thursday Oct.20, to take on the Midwestern State Lady Indians. Game time is set for 7:00. |
