VOLLEYBALL GOES UNDEFEATED IN DENTON

Oct. 15, 2005

Final Stats

Denton - With four straight points in the fifth game, the Texas A&M University-Commerce women's volleyball team jumped out on Tarleton State to capture a 3-2 win on the final day of the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament, going 3-0 on the weekend.

The Lions, now 9-13 overall, are on their longest winning streak this season with the win (30-23, 30-28, 15-30, 22-30, 15-9). The TexAnns dropped to 11-12 overall despite out-hitting the Lions. The Lions defeated Angelo State 3-0 and Eastern New Mexico 3-2 on Friday.

"I'm excited with our performance today," Lion head coach Gwen Weatherford said. "It's always good to receive some reinforcement for all their work."

The first game was always well in-hand for A&M-Commerce. In the second game, the Lions rallied to string together a 5-0 run to close the frame. They trailed a majority of the game but came back to tie at 28-all, with Jane Latu and Colleen Favaro blocking the game winner. Latu had 21 kills and Favaro ended with 17.

TSU held tight control as the Lions struggled in the third and fourth games.

But the Lions turned the tide in the final game with five of the first six scores. And after a TSU timeout, Latu added two more cross-court spikes and an ace to set the Lions up for their sixth win in five-game decisions in seven tries. Tosha Spain and Regan Jesse also combined for a critical block to keep TSU at bay.

Alicia Capparelli, who had a game-high 49 assists, ended the match with a quick tip over the net. Spain had six kills, as Jesse and Jennifer Hill added five kills each. Jackie Orr posted a game-high 20 digs.

For Hill, it was a family affair. She competed against her younger sister, Allison, who had a kill and a dig in the loss.

The Lions continue LSC North play Tuesday as they host Southeastern Oklahoma State at 7 p.m.in the Field House.
