VOLLEYBALL TAKES EASTERN NEW MEXICO IN 5

Oct. 14, 2005

Final Stats

DENTON - Texas A&M University-Commerce women's volleyball continued its strong play at the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament--at least through the first two games--for a 5-game win Friday over Eastern New Mexico.

In the morning session, the Lions (8-13) tied last season's win total with a sweep of Angelo State and later broke it with the victory over the Zias (30-20, 30-20, 28-30, 26-30, 15-9) in the afternoon.

Lion head coach Gwen Weatherford was pleased with the results. "We got to the back line consistently, and our servers did a good job of earning points." Tosha Spain had a career, earning five aces in the morning match and five more in the second.

And like before, Jane Latu led the effort in the final frame with two of her game-high 22 kills to push A&M-Commerce over the top. Spain accounted for three kills in the fifth game, ending the match with a Colleen Favaro kill down the middle. All three hit over .300 for the match.

The Zias struggled the first two games as they landed 19 kills but 18 errors over that period.

However, the Lion offensive production carried over from the morning match as they hit better than .300 the first three games. They unleashed a string of seven straight points to break open the first game and then an 11-3 run after an 8-all tie in the second.

Eastern New Mexico shifted offensively to attack the Lion front row, and it paid off for the next two games.

But the Lions rebounded with a quick 8-3 lead in the final game, coasting to the win on a pair of kills from Spain and Favaro.

Junior setter Alicia Capparelli found a career-high 60 assists, while Brittany Williams spotted 13 kills on 40 attacks in the win. Jennifer Hill and Jackie Orr landed 14 digs each.

The Lions compete in the final day of the tournament Saturday at 11 a.m. against Tarleton State.
