LIONS SWEEP ASU IN 3

Oct. 14, 2005

Final Stats

DENTON - Taking just over an hour, the Texas A&M University-Commerce women's volleyball team made quick work Friday morning of Angelo State in a 3-game sweep at the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament hosted by Texas Woman's.

With the win, the Lions (7-13) matched last season's win total with scores of 30-25, 30-25, and 30-28. Angelo State (9-12) hit just .076 for the match, while the Lions countered with a .140 hitting mark.

"In the first two games, we saw that play-to-win attitude that we see in practice," head coach Gwen Weatherford said. "It's just exciting to see that in the first two games."

The Rambelles came back in the first game to tie at 8-all, and the Lions struck for an 8-4 run and then a 7-3 streak. Tosha Spain closed the first game with one of her three aces in the first contest alone. She ended with a personal best this season of best five.

The Lions never trailed in the second game either, scoring 17 kills and just eight hitting errors. It was the best offensive output of the match. Jane Latu accounted for seven kills as Alicia Capparelli found 15 assists.

In the decisive third game, the Lions jumped out to a 10-2 lead from the start. But ASU ran away with 15 of the next 17 points for a 17-12 lead. After a Lions timeout, Latu and Colleen Favaro teamed up for six more points to eventually retake the lead for the sweep.

Capparelli tied for a game high with 31 assists to match ASU setter Tess Brindock. Latu scored 15 kills and Favaro added nine, including some of the biggest scores the Game 3 comeback. She and Jennifer Hill, who landed eight kills, both hit over .300.

The Lions continue play in Denton at 5 p.m. against Eastern New Mexico, and finished the tournament Saturday against Tarleton State at 11 a.m.
