Nov. 4, 2005
COMMERCE, TX - It took two overtime periods, but inthe end, it was a shootout that sealed A&M-Commerce's fate in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Woman's Soccer Tournament in Edmond, Okla. A shootout period came into affect after both the Lady Pioneers and the Lions remained tied 2-2 after the second overtime. The Lions (11-5-3, 5-2-2) scored four of their six shootout attempts before Texas Woman's Romy Luna's kick went off goalkeeper Stacey McDaniel to give the Lady Pioneers a fifth shootout goal. Freshman Melissa DoRemus, who has scored 9 goals in the last seven contests, continued her scoring streak for the Lions. With 45:47 on the clock, she knocked the game at one all on an unassisted score. Texas Woman's answered back 19 minutes later to put them up 2-1, but with two minutes remaining in the second half, Tamara Geels scored her first goal of the season on a corner kick to tie the game and send it into overtime. Goalkeeper Stacey McDaniel had a total of six saves for the game, with four of them coming in the second period. Between her and fellow teammate Amber Ramoz, the two goalies had recorded four straight shutouts and had posted shutouts in seven of their last eight games. The last time the Lions lost in first round action at a conference tournament was in 2001, losing to Central Oklahoma in double overtime 2-1.
The Lions will now wait to see if they earn a berth to the NCAA II regional tournament. Selections for the regional games are to be announced on Monday, Nov. 7. +++A&M-C+++
