Lions Lose in Double Overtime to No. 1 Seeded Central Oklahoma, 4-3

Nov. 2, 2007

Box Score

A goal by the University of Central Oklahoma's Jenny Racicot in the 106th minute of the Lone Star Conference Tournament semifinals led the host Bronchos past Texas A&M University-Commerce, 4-3 on Friday afternoon.

The goal spoiled the upset bid for the No. 5 seeded Lions, who had rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the 68th minute. The loss ends the season for the Lions, who posted a 9-10-2 overall mark. Central Oklahoma, the No. 1 seed and the No. 3 ranked team in the NCAA Midwest region, advances to the LSC Championship game to play No. 6 seeded West Texas A&M, who defeated No. 3 seed Angelo State in the other semifinal game.

After falling behind early 2-0 in the first six minutes, the Lions refused to concede. Second team all-Lone Star Conference selection junior Melissa DoRemus cut the UCO lead to one, 2-1, when she converted on a penalty kick in the 20th minute. Senior Cheryl Canavan got the equalizer for the Lions when she capitalized on a deflected cross from sophomore Meagan Lasley in the 35th minute as the two teams went into the intermission tied at 2.

In the second half, DoRemus put A&M-Commerce in front on her second goal of the contest. The Mesquite, Texas native again capitalized on a cross from senior Bailey Geels from about 10 yards out in the 68th minute. The Bronchos came back to tie it when Carmen Davis scored on a breakaway in the 80th minute.

With the game tied at 3, the two teams went into overtime. UCO held the Lions without a shot in the extra period. Racicot got the game-winning goal in the second extra period on a shot from 20 yards out to the upper corner for the goal.

A&M-Commerce sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Alvarado matched a season-high with 10 saves in the loss. DoRemus led a Lions attack that was out shot, 32-to-12, with a team-high four shots.
