The A&M-Commerce soccer team recorded their largest victory of the season in Thursday's 4-1 win over Eastern New Mexico at Tom Thompson Field in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Soccer Tournament in Edmond, Oklahoma. Sophomore midfielder Melissa DoRemus scored the first goal of the contest and her seventh of the season in the 4th minute to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead. Junior forward Bailey Geels blasted a shot that deflected off of the crossbar and DoRemus headed the ball past the Eastern New Mexico goalkeeper to score the Lions first of four goals. The Lions (11-7-3) added to their lead in the 40th minute when freshman defender Whitney Hancock sent a direct free kick into the box and junior defender Tamara Geels headed the ball into the right side of the goal to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. Eastern New Mexico (9-9-1) answered just 3:35 into the second half to reduce the Lions lead to 2-1 on a Nicole Bregler goal. Bregler headed in a cross from Kara Henderson to record her second goal of the season in scoring the Zias first goal of the match. Tamara Geels responded for the Lions in the 69th minute to increase the A&M-Commerce lead to 3-1. After a Whitney Hancock free kick into the box, the ball bounced around and came to rest roughly two yards from the goal line and Geels kicked it in to record her second goal of the match and her third of the season. The Lions added their fourth and final goal to put the match out of reach for Eastern New Mexico. DoRemus took a shot from just inside the box and freshman midfielder Ashley Osborne kicked it past the outstretched arms of Zias goalkeeper Stephanie Sanchez to record the game's final goal. The Lions dominated almost every statistical category en route to the 4-1 victory. A&M-Commerce outshot Eastern New Mexico 22-5 and recorded 12 more shots on goal (16-4) than the Zias. With the victory the Lions move on to the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament to take on the No. 2-seeded West Texas A&M Lady Buffs at noon on Friday.
