Lions Defeat Eastern New Mexico 3-2 in Double Overtime Thriller
Oct. 22, 2006
Commerce, Texas
Melissa DoRemus netted a penalty kick in the 105th minute of play as the Lions scored three unanswered goals to hand Lone Star Conference opponent Eastern New Mexico a 3-2 loss in their final match of the regular season. Eastern New Mexico (9-8-1, 4-4-1) scored the contest's first goal following a corner kick by Nicole Bregler. Bregler's kick deflected off of an A&M-Commerce defender and Anna Funck booted the ball past Lion goalkeeper Amber Ramoz in the 14th minute to give the Zias an early 1-0 lead. The Zias added to their lead in the 49th minute as Megan Dozier took a through pass from Bregler to score her 11th goal of the season and to give Eastern New Mexico a seemingly safe 2-0 advantage. A&M-Commerce (10-7-3, 5-3-1) responded with their first goal of the contest just 1:33 later when freshman midfielder Ashley Osborne scored her second goal of the season on a pass from junior forward Bailey Geels to close the Zias' lead to 2-1. The Lions struck again in the 64th minute to tie the score at two. Senior forward Tia Rew sent a cross into the box and sophomore Melissa DoRemus headed it in to record her fifth goal of the season. Following a 41:18 scoring drought, DoRemus was fouled in the Zias' penalty area in the 105th minute of the contest to setup the possible game-winning goal. DoRemus took the kick and sent the ball into the back of the net to record her second penalty kick goal of the year and to give the Lion's an improbable 3-2, come-from-behind victory. The Lions outshot Eastern New Mexico 12-7 and both teams recorded five shots on goal in a physical match that featured 33 fouls and three yellow cards. With Sunday's victory, the Lions bettered their chances of qualifying for the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament, which begins Thursday, October 26 in Edmond, Oklahoma with the top six teams - based on their regular season conference records - competing.
