Sept. 28, 2007

Box Score

Commerce, Texas

Senior Bailey Geels scored on two headers and assisted on a goal to lead Texas A&M-Commerce to a 4-1 win over Northeastern State in the Lone Star Conference opener.

The Lions (5-5, 1-0 LSC) out shot the Riverhawks, 33-9 margin in the win. Geels had a season-high 12 shots, including seven on goal in the win for A&M-Commerce. In addition, with the victory, A&M-Commerce head coach Neil Piper extends his career record to 8-1-1 in Lone Star Conference openers.

Geels capitalized on a pair of passes from sophomore Meagan Lasley for the early tallies. In the third minute, Geels went unmarked by the NSU defender for a header to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead.

The Geels and Lasley tandem partnered up for the second goal of the contest in the 11th minute. Lasley sent a corner kick feed into Geels for the goal to extend the margin to 2-0.

A&M-Commerce extended its lead to 3-0 when freshman Chelsey Haight scored on a break-away goal in the 39th minute for her second goal of the season.

The three first half goals by the Lions match a season-high as they also tallied three first half goals in a 3-1 win over Texas A&M International on Sept. 16.

In the 70th minute, Northeastern State avoided the shutout when Dani Watson found a loose ball after a free kick by Ashley Badeen to trim the A&M-Commerce lead to 3-1.

The Lions continued to attack against the NSU defense. Geels returned the favor to Lasley in the 83rd minute for the final A&M-Commerce goal to extend the margin back to three, 4-1.

Next, A&M-Commerce returns home for a conference match up on Sunday against East Central at 2 pm. The Tigers enter the contest with a 4-5-2 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the LSC.
