Commerce, Texas

On Friday, for the second-straight year, the Texas A&M University-Commerce women's soccer program has knocked off the No. 2 ranked team in the nation. The Lions posted a 3-2 victory over previously undefeated and second ranked Tampa on Friday afternoon in Miami, Florida.

Last year, the Lions defeated No. 2 ranked Metro State, 2-1, in Commerce. Despite the loss, Metro State went on to win the national championship.

A&M-Commerce (2-1) got on the board in the 41st minute on the first career goal by freshman Dana Deerinwater, who scored on a header via sophomore Meagan Lasley to put the Lions in front 1-0. With a 1-0 halftime lead, the Lions were out shot by Tampa, 11-2; however, sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Alvarado made three saves in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Lions added to their lead on a Tamara Geels header from a corner kick by Megan Monroe to extend the A&M-Commerce lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute. It is the third assist of the season for Monroe.

In the last 10 minutes, both teams turned up the offensive pressure. Alvarado rose to the occasion making three saves in the final minutes. After giving up a goal to Tampa's Shelby Kuni, A&M-Commerce sophomore Lacy Alexander scored her first goal of the season in the 87th minute, which also proved to be the game-winning tally. Alexander stole the ball from the Tampa goalkeeper and fired a shot outside the 18-yard line for the goal. Kuni added her second goal of the afternoon in the 89th minute for the final margin.

Also, in the win, Alvarado made a career-high eight saves on 25 shots for A&M-Commerce.

The Lions will return to action on Sunday with a 12:30 pm match against Barry in Miami, Florida.
