A&M-COMMERCE WOMEN LOSE A CLOSE FIGHT

Dec. 8, 2005

Final Stats

PORTALES, N.M. - A&M-Commerce continued crossover play as they traveled to Portales, N.M. to face the Zias of Eastern New Mexico. The Lions fought hard throughout the entire contest, but ended up falling short in a final minute decision 66-63.

The game was tied twice in the final two minutes of the contest. A&M-C found themselves trailing late in the game, but Kanani Marshal came in strong, recording her first block of the night, ripping the ball away from the ENMU guard to lay the ball in and give the Lions their first lead of the second half 61-59. The Zias came back shooting two from the line after a foul was called on Andrea Lewis.

With 50 seconds left in the game, Althea Byfield turned the ball over, giving guard Ashley Sutton a chance to hit one behind the arc to put the Zias up by three. The Lions answered back on a lay-up by Katredria Mosely to bring the women within one, but another foul was called and the Zias once again hit both shots from the line to seal their sixth win of the season.

In a struggling first half for both teams, the Lions found themselves in serious trouble before heading into the locker room. A&M-C was neck and neck with the Zias throughout the first half, until the very last 20 seconds, when guard Lindsey Wood scored four unanswered points to give ENMU a two point lead (24-22) after the end of one.

Leading all scorers for the Lions was Katedria Mosely, posting a double-double for the night with 20 points and 14 boards. Andrea Lewis also scored in double figures with 12 points and four rebounds. Senior Althea Byfield posted a game high in total boards tallying 11 rebounds. It was the first time this season that Byfield recorded more than 10 boards in a game.

ENMU's Heather Brown led the Zias recording 23 points for the night. She was assisted by the Zias leading scorer Tiana Bryant who scored 12.

The Lions will finish their road tour Saturday night as the head to Canyon, Texas to face 6-0 West Texas A&M. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
