#9 West Texas A&M Hands Lions 63-54 Defeat
Dec. 7, 2006
Commerce, Texas
Despite a game-high 20 points from sophomore guard Britney Jordan and a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) by junior forward Katedria Mosley, the No. 9 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs defeated the host Lions, 63-54 loss at the A&M-Commerce Field House on Thursday. Jordan led the Lions in scoring for the fifth time on the season and Mosley had her third double-double of the season and the 14th of her career; plus senior guard Kanani Marshal chipped in nine points and dished out six assists in the loss. A&M-Commerce (5-6) won the tip and quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Jordan lay-up en route to an early 9-8 advantage with 11:54 remaining in the first half, but the Lady Buffs countered with a 9-0 run over the next 3:46 to take a 17-9 lead. WTAMU would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest. The Lady Buffs (8-1) stretched that lead to as many as nine points (22-13) and took a 30-23 lead into the locker room. The Lions outscored West Texas A&M 18-8 in the paint and managed 10 points off of 11 Lady Buff turnovers in the first half. A&M-Commerce shot 38% from the floor for the half, while WTAMU made 50% of their first half shot attempts. Jordan led all scorers in the first half with eight points to pace the Lions offense in the first 20 minutes. Courtney Lee led the way for the Lady Buffs in the first half with six points and three rebounds. Trailing by 11 in the second half, 41-30, A&M-Commerce went on a 7-0 run to pull to within four, 41-37, midway through the second half. A Lady Buffs' Kalee Carey lay-up ended the scoring drought to extend the WTAMU margin to six, 43-37. In the loss, A&M-Commerce outscored West Texas A&M 32-14 in the paint, but the Lions shot 30% from the floor on the evening. The Lions forced 25 Lady Buff turnovers, which translated into 20 of the Lions' 54 points. In the win, the Lady Buffs connected on 48% of their field goal attempts. The A&M-Commerce defense held pre-season Lone Star Conference South Division Player of the Year selection, Emily Brister to seven points, who entered the contest averaging 20.6 points per game and had scored in double figures in her previous 29 games. The Lions will look to snap a four-game losing streak as they host Eastern New Mexico at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the A&M-Commerce Field House.
