LION WOMEN CELEBRATE MILESTONES IN SATURDAY'S 77-63 VICTORY

Feb. 4, 2006

Final Stats

COMMERCE, Texas - Kanani Marshal showed Saturday afternoon that records were made to be broken, leading the A&M-Commerce women to the school's 300th win, a 77-63 routing of Southwestern Oklahoma State at the Field House.

The junior guard's fourth 3-point basket on the night gave her a school-record 66 this season.

Shooting a season best of 58 percent on the night, the Lions, now 12-9 and 4-2 in the Lone Star Conference North, earned a share of the division lead by defeating the 11-10 Lady Bulldogs, who dropped to 4-2 in the North.

A&M-Commerce was nearly unstoppable for the first 10 minutes of the game, sinking 11 of their first 12 shots from the floor that included eight in row during one stretch. The Lions began the game hitting from long range to jump to a 9-2 lead. The Lions then went to mount a 35-8 lead with 9:51 to play in the half.

Rashida Wilson had scored 10 points herself before the Lady Bulldogs were in double figures with 7:32 to play in the first.

Following a 14-6 run by Southwestern, Marshal responded with her third three of the game with four minutes to play in the first, matching Tina Moore's mark of 65 threes set in the 1996-97 season.

Andrea Lewis followed suit from long range and the Lions led 47-24 with less than three minutes remaining in the half. The first half ended with the Lions up 48-27 on an incredible 69.2 percent shooting performance.

The Lady Bulldogs had worked the lead back down to 14 with eight minutes and then again with almost seven minutes remaining in the game. But Marshal turned back Southwestern with her record three to put the Lions up 65-48, sealing the ninth win for the Lions at home this season and matching last season's overall win total.

The Lions scored 22 points off 17 Lady Bulldog turnovers and added 28 points in the paint. Wilson scored 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting and nine assists. Marshal also posted nine assists in a 14-point outing while adding three steals. Dawn Montgomery added 10 points.

Julie Dawson scored 15 points in leading the Southwestern. Kayla Horn recorded a doubled-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Niki Sloan was 4-of-11 from 3-point range while adding 14 points in the loss.

The Lions continue division play Feb. 8 at the Field House against Central Oklahoma at 6 p.m. It will be the second "Night Out at the Field House" this season as special guest J.J. Jumper will make an appearance.
