Lions Move into First Place in LSC North with 78-61 Win Over Cameron

Sophomore guard Britney Jordan scored 19 points and dished out 11 assists to record her third double-double of the season to lead Texas A&M-Commerce to a 78-61 victory over Cameron on Wednesday at the A&M-Commerce Field House. Senior guard Kanani Marshal led all scorers with 22 points on 6-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc and senior forward Tradawn Short scored a career-high 19 points and pulled down a team-high five rebounds, in the victory. Shantel Whitaker scored a team-high 17 points to pace the Lady Aggies offense, while Chelsea Turner and Tiffany Williams each scored 16 points and collected nine and seven rebounds, respectively. With a 53-46 loss by Northeastern State to host East Central on Wednesday night, the Lions move into first place in the Lone Star Conference North Division. The No. 6 regionally-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce squad has now won four straight games and 11 of their last 12 to move to 16-7 on the season and 4-1 in the Lone Star Conference North Division. The Lions 16 wins ties the school record for most wins in a season, which was set last year. Cameron drops to 3-17 on the season and 1-5 in the Lone Star Conference North Division. The Lions got off to a slow start, but a 10-2 run midway through the first half gave A&M-Commerce an insurmountable lead, 27-20, with 4:31 remaining. Jordan connected on two three-pointers during the run to give the Lions a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Marshal led all scorers with 13 points in the first half, while Jordan added ten points and four assists as the Lions shot 61.5% from the floor through the first 20 minutes of play. A&M-Commerce opened the second half on an 11-2 run to take their biggest lead of the contest, 50-29, with 16:46 left in the contest. Cameron responded on the strength of a 9-0 over the next two minutes to trim the Lions margin to 11, but the A&M-Commerce defense held strong en route to the 78-61 victory. The Lions connected on 32-of-52 (61.5%) field goals and scored 31 points off of 21 Lady Aggie turnovers in the decisive win. A&M-Commerce also connected on 11-of-19 three-pointers to shoot a season-best 57.9% from beyond the arc. The Lions return to action on Saturday as they travel to Weatherford, Okla. to face Southwestern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m.
