Three Lions scored in double figures including senior Melissa Bratton, who recorded her first double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, led the Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team to a 78-74 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, A&M-Commerce (14-5, 3-1 LSC North) wins its third in a row and head coach Denny Downing moves one win closer to .500 for his career. The sixth-year head coach is 83-84 for his career. Bratton was joined in double figures by Katedria Mosley and Britney Jordan, who added 15 and 14 points, respectively. It was a big second half for the senior from Idabel, who scored 14 of her 15 and grabbed eight of her nine rebounds in the second 20 minutes. Also, in the win, the Lions outscored and out rebounded the Savage Storm by a 38-to-20 and 52-to-38 margin, respectively. A key factor in both efforts was the play of junior Nola Taylor, who scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds in 26 minutes of action off the bench. In addition to the efforts from Taylor, senior Dominee Evans scored seven points and pulled down six rebounds. Trailing 13-12 with 12:50 left in the first half, junior Tarika Campbell hit a three pointer to spark an 11-3 spurt that put the Lions in front 23-16 with 8:25 remaining in the opening stanza. Southeastern scored the next seven points to tie the game for the second time. Both teams exchange mini spurts as Jordan scored five of the last seven points of the half to give A&M-Commerce a 36-33 lead at the half. A&M-Commerce managed to extend its lead to as much as 19 in the second half. However, the Savage Storm would mount a comeback effort on the strength of a 13-2 run midway through the half and an 8-0 spurt to close out the game. Each run would bring them closer, but the Lions held off the Southeastern Oklahoma State surge for the win. The Lions will play on the road for its next two games, starting with a contest at Southwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs are currently 10-5 overall - including a 9-3 mark at home - and 1-1 in the Lone Star Conference North Division.
