Northeastern State Snaps Lions Winning Streak at Seven Games

Northeastern State went on an 11-1 run to start the second half en route to a 69-61 win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday afternoon in the Lone Star Conference North Division opener for both teams. The loss snaps a school record seven-game winning streak for the Lions.

Texas A&M-Commerce (12-7, 0-1 LSC North) landed three players in double figures, including a game-high 25 from Kanani Marshal. The Madison, Wisconsin native went 6-for-14 from beyond the arc and she was joined in double figures by Britney Jordan, who added 15 and Katedria Mosley scored 13 to pace the Lions.

Northeastern State (10-5, 1-0 LSC North) also had three players in double figures, Wendy Fehrenbach led the Lady Reds with 19 points, hitting 5 of 7 three pointers. She was joined in double figures by Jezzal Quintana, who scored 11 and Erin Jent added 10.

After being tied at 30 at the intermission, NSU opened the second half with an 11-1 run. During the spurt, Lindsey Sams made a pair of three pointers to spark the Lady Reds. The Lions would get as close as three, 47-44, with 7:16 remaining before Jezzal Quintana hit back-to-back three pointers to put NSU in front 55-44.

The Lions closed out the opening 20 minutes with an 11-3 run to tie the contest at 30. During the run, Alicia Johnson, Marshal and Jordan each knocked down three pointers to spark the Lions.

The first half featured five ties, but the Lions led just once when Tradawn Short made two free throws at the 6:05 mark. Next, NSU came down the floor and took a two-point lead, 21-19, when Fehrenbach made her third three pointer of the first half.
 

 

Texas A&M-Commerce will look to start a new winning streak on Wednesday night, traveling to East Central in Ada, Oklahoma at 6 pm.
