Lions Rally Falls Short in 74-68 Loss to Central Oklahoma
Jan. 16, 2008
A three-point play by Lizzie Brenner with 45.3 seconds remaining led Central Oklahoma to a 74-68 win over Texas A&M University-Commerce in the Lone Star Conference North Division opener for both teams.
With the game tied at 68, Brenner drove to the hoop and made a lay up. While driving for the lay up, the Lions' Brittany Williams was whistled for a foul. Brenner, a 2006-07 first team all-Lone Star Conference North Division selection, converted the free throw for the three-point play to put the host Bronchos up by two, 70-68. On the ensuing possession, junior Britney Jordan got a three pointer off and put-back attempts by Dominee Evans and Katedria Mosley fell short. Following the possession, the Bronchos' Cristina Yarbrough made two of four free throws for the final margin. With the loss, A&M-Commerce falls to 11-5 overall and 0-1 in the LSC North Division. Jordan led all scorers with 21 points, including a game-high five assists. She was joined in double digits by Evans, who came off the bench for 13 points and 12 rebounds for the fifth double double of her career. It is the first time that A&M-Commerce has dropped a decision when Evans records a double double. The Bronchos extend their winning streak to six games and improve to 13-3 overall and 1-0 in the LSC North. Cassidy Pillow led UCO with 18 points, including 13 in the first half. She was joined by Brenner, who recorded her sixth double double of the season, with a 16-point and 11-rebound effort. UCO opened the game on a 12-2 run and extended the margin to as much as 17 in the first half en route to a 42-29 halftime lead. Central Oklahoma was the last team in the Lone Star Conference North Division to defeat the Lions. Following the 84-64 defeat to the Bronchos, the Lions won their next 11 games en route a Lone Star Conference North Division, Lone Star Conference Tournament and NCAA South Central Regional Championship.
The Lions will remain on the road for its next contest when they travel to Ada, Oklahoma on Saturday at 2 pm to face East Central.
