Lions Rally for 41-39 Triple Overtime Win Over Southeastern Oklahoma State

Oct. 6, 2007

Stats

Playing in their second-straight overtime game, Texas A&M-Commerce rallied from a 23-16 deficit to defeat Southeastern Oklahoma State, 41-39 in triple overtime.

An over-the-shoulder catch by freshman Chris Miller on a 20-yard touchdown reception in the third overtime and the ensuing two-point conversion run by junior Nabil El-Amin led the Lions to the victory.

A&M-Commerce (2-5, 1-1 LSC) snapped a four-game losing streak in the win as they outgained the Savage Storm 410-to-294. The 410 yards are the most by an A&M-Commerce squad since Oct 30, 2004 against Angelo State in the four-year history of head coach Scotty Conley and the most points scored by a Lions team since a 1998 squad defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State.

El-Amin led a Lions ground game with his first 100-yard game of the season, running for a game-high 106 yards on 28 carries. Junior quarterback Terry Mayo came off the bench and had a hand in all five touchdowns. He went on to throw for 240 yards and three touchdowns, completing 18 of 26 passes as well as two rushing touchdowns. Mayo and sophomore starter Trent Miller connected with eight different receivers, including Chris Miller, who had a team-high and career-high five receptions.

Southeastern Oklahoma (1-4, 0-1 LSC) featured a balanced attack as quarterback Kolby Williams completed 13 of 26 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns and running back Sean Cooper ran the ball 23 times for 72 yards.

Trailing 23-16 with 3:17 left in regulation and facing a 3rd and 10, Mayo found Meldrick Grice for a 19-yard gain and a first down. After an incompletion, Mayo went to tight end Anthony Eustace on back-to-back receptions for 14 and seven yards, respectively. Mayo completed a pass but it was his elusive feet that set up a 1st and goal when he scrambled to the SOSU 6. After an A&M-Commerce penalty, Mayo found Grice for an 11-yard touchdown to tie the game at 23.

In the first extra period, both teams exchanged field goals to tie the game at 26. In the second overtime, the Lions got the ball first. Facing 3rd and 10, Mayo found Eustace for a 24-yard gain to set up first and goal at the one-yard line. Two plays later, Mayo called his own number for his second rushing touchdown of the game.

In the decisive overtime, Williams completed a 32-yard touchdown to put SOSU in front 39-33. On the ensuing two-point conversion, the Lions defense continued its strong play stuffing the Savage Storm. A&M-Commerce came back on its possession with a five-yard gain on a reverse by JaMichael Palmer on first down. On the next play, Mayo found Miller for the game-tying score followed by El-Amin, converting the game-winning two-point conversion for the Lions victory..

The Lions return home for its next two games, including a 2 pm tilt against Northeastern State on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
