Former Florida State defensive lineman Randy Wilkins is in his second season as the defensive line coach at Texas A&M-Commerce.
Wilkins made an immediate impact with the Lions defensive line as A&M-Commerce defense ranked second in the Lone Star Conference in rushing defense (115.4 ypg) and passing defense (189.3 ypg) as well as third in total defense (304.6 ypg). Nationally, the Lions ranked 25th in rushing defense and 30th in total defense. Individually, Marcus Smith was third in the LSC and 46th nationally in tackles for loss (15.0) and Andreé Smith finished fourth in the LSC and 76th in the nation in sacks (6.5). As a result of their efforts, Marcus Smith was named Lone Star Conference North Division Defensive Lineman of the Year and first team all-conference defensive end honors. In addition to Smith, defensive tackle A.J. Johnson was named first team all-LSC North Division and defensive end Andreé Smith was named LSC North Division Defensive Player of the Week after the Lions held Northeastern State to 119 yards of total offense. In 2007, the A&M-Commerce defense on eight occasions had seven tackles-or-more for loss, held their opponents under 100 yards on the ground on five occasions and had four sacks on three occasions. Prior to coming to A&M-Commerce, Wilkins was a graduate assistant at Troy University, where he spent two seasons including a 41-17 New Orleans Bowl victory over Rice where he coached the defensive line after the defensive line coach left for another position at the end of the 2006 season. As the graduate assistant during the season, he coached the defensive ends for a unit that tied for 15th in the country in sacks and 18th in tackles for a loss. Wilkins was also involved in the scouting and film breakdowns of the upcoming opponent. The Jacksonville, Fla. native played collegiately at Florida State University, where he worked his way into the defensive line rotation from a walk-on position to a scholarship prior to his junior season. He was a member of five bowl teams, including four national championship games. He saw action both as a defensive end and as a nose guard while serving as a crucial backup to an eventual All-American and playing on special teams units as a three-year letterwinner. He graduated from FSU with a double major in business management and marketing. He completed his master's degree at Troy University in sport and fitness management in 2007. |
