Texas A&M-Commerce Drops 65-64 Decision to West Texas A&M
Dec. 7, 2006
Commerce, Texas
West Texas A&M junior guard Moshn Said made three free throws with just one second remaining to give the visiting Buffaloes a 65-64 come-from-behind victory on Thursday night at the A&M-Commerce Field House. The Lions, who fall to 5-4, were led by senior guard Lamar Searight, who scored eight of the Lions' final 10 points and connected on 11-of-13 free throws to finish with a team-high 23 points. Martel Jones added 11 points, while Bobby Joshua and Champ Sylvester scored eight and seven, respectively. West Texas A&M (4-5) senior forward Damien Lolar scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record his fifth double-double of the season. Said finished the game with 14 points, including the three-decisive free throws. The first half, which featured six ties and nine lead changes, saw both teams shoot over 50% from the floor. The Lions outscored West Texas A&M 24-16 in the paint and managed 11 points off of nine Buffalo turnovers. Both teams finished the first half with 15 rebounds as West Texas A&M sported a 39-36 halftime lead. In an entertaining second half, the Lions took their first lead of the second half, 44-43, with 14:32 remaining when Jones knocked down a three pointer with the shot clock expiring. The Lions held on to the lead for the next 13:17, until WTAMU's Mike Baskerville three-pointer put the Buffaloes in front by one, 61-60, with just 1:15 remaining.
Searight answered by connecting on two free throws and a clutch jumper from the left elbow with just 14 seconds remaining to give the Lions a 64-62 lead. Following a WTAMU timeout that moved the ball up to midcourt, a three-point attempt by Said drew a foul on the Lions' Bobby Joshua. Said connected on all three free throws and a last-second shot by Jones came up just short to give West Texas A&M the victory. The Lions shot 44% from the floor for the contest, while West Texas A&M connected on 40% of their field goal attempts, in a game that featured a total of 12 ties and 15 lead changes. A&M-Commerce outscored the Buffaloes 32-24 in the paint. Texas A&M-Commerce will host Eastern New Mexico at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the A&M-Commerce Field House. At halftime of the game, the opening round of the $1,000 Wesley Imaging Shoot Out will take place. |
