Lions Defeat Angelo State, 81-75 in LSC Crossover Game

Texas A&M-Commerce withstood a late threat by Angelo State to prevail with an 81-75 win on Thursday night at the Junell Center.

The Lions (5-2) were led by Lamar Searight, who scored 22 points - 16 of which came from the free-throw line. The senior from Pontiac, Michigan nearly had a triple double with eight rebounds and a career-high nine assists. Texas A&M-Commerce was also able to get points from behind the arc, making seven three pointers. Kevin Widemond hit four and Champ Sylvester came off the bench to make three, scoring 18 and 16 points, respectively. In the loss, Angelo State (2-3) got a game-high 30 points from Marcus Hubbard on the strength of 10-for-22 shooting from the field and a 9-for-9 effort at the free-throw line.

In the win, the Lions shot 81% making 30 free throws on 37 attempts and they forced 18 turnovers which led to 27 points.

With a three-point lead, in the first half and 9:18 remaining, Texas A&M-Commerce went on a 19-6 run over the next six minutes to take a 17-point lead. The Lions went into halftime with a 42-34 lead over Angelo State, scoring 10 points off turnovers and making 16 of 18 attempts from the free-throw line. The Texas A&M-Commerce defense held Angelo State to 36.1% shooting.

With a 17-4 run, in the second half, the Lions led by as much as 19, 62-43, with 13:15 left before the Rams cut it down to four with 1:02 remaining. During the run, Widemond made three three pointers, including two on back-to-back possessions to spark the Texas A&M-Commerce run.
 

 

The Lions will remain on the road as they travel to take on Abilene Christian on Saturday at 4 pm.
