Angelo State Defeats A&M-Commerce on Last-Second Tip In

Angelo State ended the game on a 20-6 run; including a decisive tip-in with 1.8 seconds left by Denell Stephens led the visiting Rams to a 77-75 win over Texas A&M University-Commerce on Thursday night.

A&M-Commerce (5-9) had four players in double figures, including a game-high from senior Scooby Johnson. He was joined by Kevin Widemond and Lance Jackson, who added 13 apiece and Champ Sylvester chipped in 10.

The Rams (11-4) had a pair of players - Stephens and Marcus Hubbard, who contributed double double performances in the win. Stephens had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Hubbard added a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds in the victory. The two were joined in double figures by Roger Johnson, who added 16 and Nathan Walton, who chipped in 11.

The Lions shot 51.6% from the field in the second half, but A&M-Commerce was held scoreless over the final 3:26. With increased defensive intensity, during that span, Angelo State managed to cut an A&M-Commerce lead of 12, 69-57 to tying it at 75 with an 18-6 run over the next 4:12.

With the game tied at 75, A&M-Commerce failed to convert on four three pointer attempts over the final 1:52. With 27.7 seconds remaining, Angelo State second-year head coach Fred Rike set up a final play for the Rams as Brice Nengsu drove to the hoop for a lay up, but Stephens picked up the loose rebound in the air for the game-winning tip in.
 

 

The Lions will look to resume its winning ways with its final Lone Star Conference crossover game on Saturday at 4 pm against Abilene Christian.
