Midwestern State Defeats Texas A&M-Commerce, 101-84

A 15-5 run in the first half led host Midwestern State to a 101-84 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday night at the D.L. Ligon Coliseum. In the loss, five Lions scored in double figures led by a team-high 19 from Lamar Searight as Texas A&M-Commerce falls to 6-8. He was joined by Lance Jackson, who scored 17, Archie Beason added 14, Brad Brickens and Kevin Widemond scored 12 and 10, respectively. Midwestern State raises their record to 9-3 in the win; plus, they got a game-high 25 points from Eric Dawson to lead four Mustangs in double figures. He was joined by Chad Rickett, who added 19, Drew Coffman scored 12 and Chris Francois chipped in 10 off the bench. When Alvin Thomas converted a three-point play 2:07 into the contest to tie the game at 6-6. The Mustangs outscored the Lions 32-16 over the next 9:02 to take a 38-20 lead and during the spurt, Midwestern State knocked down four three pointers. The Lions clawed back to get within nine, 45-36 as MSU outscored the Lions 15-7 over the final 4:07 of the opening half for a 60-42 halftime lead. Each team got off 38 shots in the opening half, including five three pointers but the host Mustangs made 60.5% of their shots for the 18-point lead. At the intermission, Searight added 10 in the opening 20 minutes to pace the Lions and Dawson scored 15 and Rickett added 14 in the first half to lead the Mustangs.
The Lions managed to get the MSU lead down to 14, 98-84, but that was with 1:20 left in the contest. Texas A&M-Commerce worked the deficit with a 9-0 run, but it was too late. In the second half, the Lions shot 38.7% from the field, making 12 of 31 shots and Midwestern State shot 50% from the field, making 13 of 26 shots. Next, Texas A&M-Commerce will look to snap its four-game losing streak, when they host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday at 8 pm at the A&M-Commerce Field House. |
