Texas A&M University-Commerce sophomore Kyle Thompson along with Chad Schaertl of Angelo State and Shawna-Kaye Thompson of Abilene Christian were named Lone Star Conference Academic Athletes of the Year on Thursday when the league officials announced the LSC's annual academic awards for men's and women's track and field.

Schaertl and Thompson were joined by eight other LSC track and field stars on the LSC Men's All-Academic Team, while ACU's Thompson led a group of 11 standouts, including Texas A&M-Commerce senior Niki Williams on the LSC Women's All-Academic Team.

Thompson from Cooper, Texas was third in the men's high jump, clearing 6-6 and was fifth in a NCAA-provisional time of 14.39 in the 110-meter hurdles at the Lone Star Conference Championships.

Senior Niki Williams from Fayetteville, Arkansas was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and third in the 5,000-meter run en route to earning all-Lone Star Conference team for the third time.

In addition to the 19 men and women on the All-Academic Teams, nine more student-athletes were recognized on the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.20 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. All qualifying student-athletes not selected for the All-Academic Team are then named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Along with Schaertl and Thompson on the Men's All-Academic Team were Eastern New Mexico's Guy Kcholi, Kennedy Baiywo, Jacob Wiklund and Gillie Lopez, ACU's Vladyslav Gorbenko, Texas A&M-Kingsville's Anthony Ayala and ASU's Steven Barraza and Daniel Kern.

On the women's team with Thompson were Wildcat teammates Angie Aguilar, Kim Prather and Jessica Blair, ASU's Trista McIntyre, Kandra Lakey and Ashley Painter, Tarleton State's Cassidi Porter, A&M-C's Niki Williams, along with ENMU's Brittany Bauer and Hilaree Chavez.
