Four Lions Earn Academic Honors from Lone Star Conference

May 1, 2008

Four members of the Texas A&M University-Commerce track and field team earned recognition for their academic efforts on Thursday when league officials announced the Lone Star Conference's annual academic awards for men's and women's track and field.

Juniors Josh Conder and Anthony Tosie were among the 11 selected for the All-Academic Team and junior Anthony Valle and sophomore Alfredo Soto were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Conder, a junior from Cash, is a health major and competes in the high jump and in the 400-meter dash. Earlier this year, Conder has a clearance of 6-4 in the high jump that is the fourth-best in the LSC. Tosie, who was the winner of the inaugural men's grade-point average award at the most recent all-sports banquet, is a junior from Argyle is a public relations major. He currently has a season-best time of 2:08.59 in the 800-meter run.

For Soto, it is his second All-Academic Team honor after earning the same recognition in the fall as a member of the cross country team. The Elgin, Texas native has the team's third-best time in the 1,500-meter run and Valle from Saginaw, Texas is one of the top sprinters for the Lions with the second-fastest performance in the 100-meter dash (11.13) and the fourth-fastest in the 200-meter dash (22.96).

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.20 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. All qualifying student-athletes not selected for the All-Academic Team are then named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll.

All four will be in action this weekend at the Lone Star Conference Championships, starting on Friday at Abilene Christian University.
