Men and women's track and field finish fourth at the Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championships
April 23, 2006 STEPHENVILLE, Texas - In the final day of the Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championship, the Lion men and women's team leaped hurdles placing fourth respectively. The men finished straight out in fourth place tallying 69.5 points, while the women tied for fourth with host institution Tarleton State at 62 points each. "Our kids did a great job today and I am very proud of them," stated head coach Pat Ponder. "These athletes gave it their all and put a lot of muscle into this meet. We were able to leap over one of our goals for the season and now we will just continue preparing for the NCAA meet in the end of May." Distance runner Niki Williams once again put great strides into day two's events. The junior recorded 16 points of the Lions 62, winning the 3000 meter run at 10:47.15 and then placing third in the 5000 meter run at 18:38.35. The time in the 5000 meter run was a personal best for Williams after running a flat 18:59 earlier in the year. Nicole Gillham and Chelsea Pattison placed in the top five in their respecitve events coming in fourth. Gillham clocked in a 2:22.23 in the 800 meter run, while Pattison hurdled a 15.40 second race with a wind aid of 1.9. Sonoma Gordon also placed in the top five in the 100-meter dash coming in fifth with a 12.35 time and a 2.7 wind aid. The 4x100 and the 4x400 women's relay teams finished fourth and fifth respecitively clocking in times of 49.17 and 4:07.35.
In the field events, triple jumper Courtney Fernandez leaped to a 10.88 m (35-7) fifth place finish. It marked as her second personal best jump of the year. Discus throwers Rachel Redding and Britney Fisher finished behind one another at sixth and seventh place. Redding tossed a 37.18 m (121-9) throw, while Fisher threw for a 35.96 m (117-9) distance. For the men, hurdler J'wan Mitchell had the highest finish of the day in the running events. He ran a 52.73 second race in the 400-meter hurldes to place second, behind Angelo State's Justin Boyd recording eight points to the men's total. Delrick Taylor and Jessie Rodriguez both finished third in their events. Taylor sprinted a 10.60 second heat with a 3.0 wind aid, while Rodriguez cruised to a 1:57.60 time in the 800 meter run. Also placing in the 800 was Amos Davidson who came in fifth at 1:57.60. Hurdler Kyle Thompson beat a personal best in the 110 meter hurdles. The Freshman clocked in a 14.82 performance beating his previous best of the season by .25 seconds. In the relay events, the 4x400 and 4x100 placed well coming third and fourth in their final heats. The 4x400 Team A ran a time of 3:15.84. It was the first time that they had competed all season. Team A's 4x100 crew ran their second race of the year dashing to a 41.78 finish. Abilene Christian dominated the Lone Star Conference Men's and Women's Track & Field Championships, as the Wildcats were crowned LSC champions for both men and women. It was the 13th consecutive LSC championship for ACU's men, while the ACU women won for the first time in three years, ending Angelo State's two-year hold on the trophy. Before Angelo took the 2004 and 2005 crowns, ACU had been the only women's team to win the LSC title, so the Wildcats now have claimed 21 of the 23 all-time LSC ladies' track titles. +++A&M-C+++
