Julie Jordan and Niki Williams break school records after day one of the Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championships
April 22, 2006 STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Hammer thrower Julie Jordan shattered a school record with a 45.82 m (150-3) toss winning the hammer throw in day one of the Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championship. Jordan who broke the school record earlier this season with a 147-3 throw, marked herself with another personal best for the season and her career. Niki Williams set another personal best and NCAA qualifying time in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Williams clocked in an 11:24.41 to finish second in the event behind Olha Kryv'yak of Abilene Christian who ran in with an 11:02.25 time. It marked as the second time as well that she broke a school record in that event, with the first one taking place this season at the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays with an 11:24.47 time. The Lions had strong performances in several events, as they make strides in day one of the conference meet. Leslie White of the men's team leaped to a top two finish in the high jump. The Freshman matched a personal best jumping 1.99 m (6-5) in the event for a second place finish. Also placing 4th and 5th in the high jump were teammates Kyle Thompson and Kade Hanes with 1.89 m (6-2) leaps respecitively. Shot put throwers Ryan Graves, Larry Gilbert and Jeff Rayome finished 3rd, 4th and 5th, all scoring points to add on to the men's team total. Graves led the way with a 16.30 m (53-4) toss, which is a second personal best for Graves this season. Gilbert ended the day with a 15.74 m (51-6) throw, while Rayome threw 15.26 m (50-6).
In the distance events for the men, Matt Snowden and Jessie Rodriguez finished at 6th and 5th respecitively. Snowden ran a 35:25.45 in the 10000 meter run, while Rodriguez clocked in a 10:07.58 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. For the women, in the field events, Amy Addison tallied three points for the Lion women's team in the high jump. Addison leaped to a fourth place finish with a 1.54 m (5-5) jump to give her a personal best for the season. It is also the highest height that Addison has reached this year and in her career as a Lion. The Lions will end the conference meet today at Memorial Stadium on the Tarleton State campus. All of the competitors for the Lions who ran in the mid-distance and sprint events prelims yesterday have qualified for the final races today, except for one event, the 200-meter dash. Day two (final day) is scheduled for a noon start, with Angelo State leading the men's at a total of 68 points. A&M-Commerce men are currently in fourth with a total of 28 1/2 points. Abilene Christian leads the women with 75 points, with the Lion women's team also in fourth with 25 points.
