John Carlos was a member of the US Olympic Team in 1968, where he won a bronze in the 200 after winning the 100 and 200-yard dash in 1967. He was also a member of the 4x400-meter relay team. After leaving Commerce, he went on to tie a world record in 1969 in the 100 and win an AAU title in the 220-yard dash. He also went on to play in the NFL and in the CFL and was the founding member of the Olympic Project for Human Rights. He was inducted into the US National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2003.

Charles Holding was a four-time Lone Star Conference champion in the high jump. He set meet records in 1952, clearing 6-9 1/4 and broke his own record in 1964, clearing 6-10.
Another standout sprinter for the Lions was R.L. Lasater, who was a three-time Lone Star Conference champion in the 100 and 200 from 1962-1963-1964. He also was a member of three winning LSC relay teams.
