Lions Men Take Fourth and Women Finish Fifth at LSC Championships

Host Texas A&M-Commerce was fourth in the men's and fifth in the women's Lone Star Conference Championships that culminated on Sunday at Memorial Stadium. Abilene Christian swept both team titles, scoring 280 points on the women's side ahead of runner up Angelo State (211), Texas A&M-Kingsville (82), Tarleton State (60), Texas A&M-Commerce (27) and Eastern New Mexico (16). On the men's side, ACU took the championship with 248 points in front of Angelo State (152), Tarleton State (83), Texas A&M-Commerce (59), Texas A&M-Kingsville (53) and Eastern New Mexico (47). On the day, A&M-Commerce had two performers record NCAA provisional marks and set 16 season-best marks. Junior Lions thrower Darron Sheppard, who just joined the team at the semester break, recorded a NCAA provisional mark in the discus on his third throw of the afternoon. He finished second with the toss of 168-1. Teammate Larry Gilbert was third with a throw of 158-11. Sophomore Kyle Thompson recorded an NCAA provisional mark in the 110-meter hurdles (14.63) en route to a fifth-place overall finish. In her final collegiate race at Memorial Stadium, senior Niki Williams was second in the 5,000-meter run (19:50.49). The men's 4x100-meter relay was third in a time of 42.32 and the women were fourth in a season-best time of 48.78. In the 4x400-meter relay, the men were third in a season-best time of 3:19.53 and the women were fourth in a season-best mark of 4:04.13. Sophomores Jacob Almond and Leonard Jackson were fourth (49.49) and fifth (49.90), respectively in the 400-meter dash to pick up six points for the Lions. In addition, both marks are season-best for the sprinters. Sophomore Brittany Fisher was sixth in the discus with a season-best toss of 133-4. The throw by Fisher was a 14-inch improvement from her best mark of the season. Freshmen Robert Reed and Alfredo Soto set season-best times in the 1,500-meter run, finishing fifth (4:03.14) and sixth (4:07.91), respectively.
Sophomore Dana Stribbling was seventh in the pole vault, clearing a season-best 13-7 3/4. Junior Eddie Moss was seventh in the 100-meter dash (11.17) and Sonoma Gordon was eighth in the 100-meter dash in a season-best time of 12.51. Freshman Haley Wright had a season-best toss of the javelin with a throw of 101-10. The mark was a ten-foot improvement for the LaPorte, Texas native. The Lions will look to improve on its NCAA provisional marks and possibly record new ones in its final meet of the regular season at the McMurry Twilight on Thursday. |
