Junior Leslie White cleared a career-best 6-8 ¾ to win the high jump and to provisionally qualify for the upcoming NCAA Track and Field Championships to lead the Texas A&M University-Commerce track and field team on day two of the Lone Star Conference Championships. The clearance by White is the 14th-best mark in the nation and the ninth-different competitor in the nation to post that height. Battling a sore hamstring, junior Dean Laing finished seventh in the decathlon with 5,201 points. Laing recorded the best throw in the discus among the eight-person field with a season-best toss of 140-7, eclipsing his personal best and he followed that up with a season-best clearance of 10-6 1/4 in the pole vault. In the javelin, he recorded a throw of 138-0 and to conclude the event, he was third in 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:54.03. The performance by Laing did not go unnoticed as coaches throughout the LSC including A&M-Commerce head coach Rich Lawrence were impressed with the perseverance exhibited by him. "The performance by Dean today is one of the finest performances that I have ever seen in all my years of coaching," said Lawrence, a 34-year coaching veteran. In addition to the first-place finish by White in the high jump, junior Josh Conder was fifth with a clearance of 5-11 ½ and an additional two points in the team race. On the men's side, led by freshman Herron Love, who advanced in both the 100-meter (10.84) and 200-meter dash (21.81), the Lions posted four qualifying marks to advance into Sunday's final. The Lions will have two runners - Brad Dotson and Cairo Thornton - in the 400-meter dash. Dotson posted the second-fastest qualifying time of 48.80 and Thornton was the ninth-fastest in 50.56. Through six events, A&M-Commerce is in fifth place with 12 points and host Abilene Christian is in first with 72 points. Tarleton State and Angelo State are tied for second with 37 and Texas A&M-Kingsville is fourth with 25 points. In the throws, the A&M-Commerce women were led by seniors Rachel Redding and Britney Fisher. Redding recorded a personal best with a toss of 137-9 in the hammer throw en route to a third-place finish and six points towards the team total. Fisher finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 132-7 and teammate La'Shara Jefferson was third with a toss of 137-3 to pick up 10 more team points. Redding wrapped up her A&M-Commerce career with a 10th place finish and a throw of 111-2. On the women's side, the Lions qualified three performers for Sunday's finals in three-different events. Junior Sunny Henderson posted the fifth fastest time in the 100-meter hurdles (15.09) and freshman Makesha Brewer had an impressive debut in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in a season-best time of 1:01.27. Junior Alycea Wallace advanced in the 100-meter dash (12.66). In the long jump, freshman Dena Hawkins recorded a season-best jump of 16-6 en route to a seventh-place finish and junior Jessica Brown matched her season-best with a leap of 15-9.
