Records fall at the Jason's Deli Mean Green Twilight Invitational
April 27, 2006
DENTON, Texas - Three school records were broken as the Lion men and women's track and field teams continue their 2006 season at the Jason's Deli Mean Green Twilight Invitational held on the North Texas campus in Denton, Texas. Field event performer Julie Jordan shattered a school record in her respective events, while Niki Williams went for a number three record breaking run. Jordan, who has broken the school record twice this season in the hammer throw, has shattered it again tossing a 47.93 m (157-3) in the event placing first. It also marks as the top personal best for Jordan this season and in her career. This is the second consecutive week that Jordan has shattered the record in the hammer, after a 150-3 performance last week at the Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championship. Distance runner Williams, has also broken the school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the third time this season. The junior clocked in an 11:21.93 time tonight in the event to win overall and break the school record as well as her own career record. The time also gives Williams another NCAA qualifying time. Discus thrower Larry Gilbert tossed a 51.03 m (167-5) throw in the discus, setting a provisional mark in the event for the first time this season. The mark also records as a personal and career best for Gilbert. The 167-5 toss blanks out his previous throw of 158-2 at the SFA Dogwood Iinvitational this year, as well as his career mark as a Lion at 149-8, which he threw back in 2003 at the Lone Star Conference championships.
Sprinter Delrick Taylor placed well in the 100-meter dash. The six-time All-american crossed the finish line at 10.58 seconds with a 1.7 wind-aid to place second. The time marks as a personal best for Taylor this season and another NCAA qualifying time. Hurdler J'wan Mitchell placed first in his specialty event, the 400-meter hurdles. The senior clocked in a 52.77 time, defeating individual runner Terry Beard of Serious Speed and Nathan Lowry of Texas Tech. The time also marked as Mitchell's second best performance for the season in the 400-meter hurdles. The men's 4x400-meter relay ran a second best time for the season, as they performed for the second time this season. The team that consists of Taylor, Armon Dorrough, Greg Strickland and Mitchell clocked in a 3:17.30 time behind their 3:15.84 run at the LSC Track and Field Championships. The Lions will take the rest of the week off and will perform in their second to the last meet before the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships, as they travel to Arlington for the second time this season to compete at the UTA Open.
